Overview:

Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. She may leave the home of the Commander and his wife once a day to walk to food markets whose signs are now pictures instead of words because women are no longer allowed to read. She must lie on her back once a month and pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, because in an age of declining births.

The Handmaid’s Tale

Offred and the other Handmaids are valued only if their ovaries are viable. Offred can remember the years before, when she lived and made love with her husband, Luke; when she played with and protected her daughter; when she had a job, money of her own, and access to knowledge. Reviews:

Subsequent to reading ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, I can perceive any reason why this tragic classic has established such a connection on such a large number of readers. This is a book that certainly hangs with you, frequenting your considerations, long after you complete the book. It is provocative and alarming.

Consider The Handmaid’s Tale a practically physical ordeal. Consider Margaret Atwood a daring deliverer of obnoxious news – a detachment unafraid of doling out the bone-chilling, unfeeling, unaltered truth and only reality.

An awesome cross breed: a book that is famously readable, however stuffed with intriguing and provocative thoughts and imagery. I would prescribe The Handmaid’s Tale to readers who like tragic works, particularly books with social editorial. I’ll be pondering Offred and Gilead for quite a while from now on.
